The Litter-Robot III Review – Is it the Best Automated Litter Box?

Last updated: January 3, 2022 by Alvin Dy Leave a Comment

As cat owners, we love our furry felines to death. But we’re pretty sure that there are times when you wished they could clean up their own mess. Sadly, they can’t.

It might be far-fetched to wish for our cats to learn how to scoop, but here’s something close: the Litter-Robot III.

Litter-Robot III? What’s That?

Litter-Robot III is a self-cleaning cat litter box that automatically separates your cat’s waste from the litter. This self-cleaning litter box will deposit sifted waste into a drawer. When the drawer is full, you can just open it and throw away everything.

Features of the Litter-Robot III

The Litter-Robot III allows you to deal with the mess with getting your hands dirty. The automatic sifting happens after each use minimizing the odor coming from the litter box.

Litter Robot 3

Roomy litter chamber

The Litter-Robot III has a very spacious litter chamber that is perfect for bigger cats from five pounds up. It is also an ideal litter box for those with multiple cats. The insides of the Litter-Robot III has a height of 15.0 to 17.0 inches depending on the amount of litter you put in while having a width and depth of 20.0 inches.

The whole thing measures 29.5 by 24.3 by 27.0 inches, while the litter bed is 14.0 inches wide. The waste drawer has dimensions of 5.0 by 12.5 by 16.0 inches.

Automatic cleaning

The Litter-Robot III will start every time your cat finishes doing the deed. You do not have to manually start it, as such you can be sure that the litter box is clean even when you are not home.

Minimize the odor

Because it separates the waste material from the litter immediately after use, there is no time for the smell to fester. It goes straight to the waste drawer, which is carbon-filtered and completely enclosed.

You no longer have to find somewhere isolated for your kitty litter. You can even put this in the living room if you like.

Emptying with no mess

The waste drawer is very accessible, making it easy to empty. What’s more, you do not have to worry about the mess, all you need is to take out the bag, tie it and then dispose of it.

It’s that easy!

Full drawer indicator

The Litter-Robot III tells you when it’s time to empty it.

Adjustable timer

The Litter-Robot III may be set to wait three, seven, or 15 minutes from the time your cat sets foot into the chamber and the time it starts to clean. This timer ensures that the litter will not accidentally start the cleaning process with your cat still in it.

Automatic nightlight

The Litter-Robot III has an automatic night light that helps older cats see what they are doing. If you do not need it, you can toggle this feature off.

Works with multiple cats

The Litter-Robot III can accommodate cats that weigh five pounds or more. Three or four cats can use the same device, but they will have to wait for their turns. The Litter-Robot III has a weight sensor that automatically adjusts to detect cats of different weights.

90-day money back guarantee

If you are not sure that you or your cats will like the Litter-Robot III, no sweat. It comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee so you can return it if your cat doesn’t want to sit in it. The Litter-Robot III is also durable that the company backs with an 18-month full warranty.

Save time and money

The Litter-Robot III allows you to skip the daily scooping and just do what you need to do. Convert your scooping time into free time and save money as well. What’s more, you can save money. All your Litter-Robot III needs are the device and the litter itself. You do not have to buy anything else.

Further, you use less litter than before.

What’s in the Box?

Every package comes with a fully-assembled Litter-Robot III, and the following:

  • Carbon filter
  • Waste drawer liners
  • 15-volt DC power supply
  • Quick start guide
  • Instruction manual
  • Quick reference guide
  • Return & repack instructions
  • Other user materials

Ratings and Reviews for the Litter-Robot III

With around 3,500 reviewers leaving their opinions on the company’s online store, the Litter-Robot III receives a rating of 4.7 out of 5.0 stars. People like how this device works, freeing them from having to scoop cat litter themselves. The Litter-Robot III also gets rid of the smell. There are others who report that even their fussiest cats use the device.

However, some reviewers have come across some issues with their devices. Even then, customer support was quick to respond and sent them replacement parts where necessary. Others complain that they have to reset the Litter-Robot III often.

What You Will Like About the Litter-Robot III

One of the things that will make you immediately fall in love with the Litter-Robot III is that it frees you from having to clean the litter for a few days. Even then, your house will not smell terrible. Everything you need is provided, and even the package arrives fully assembled, all you need to do is to find a place for it.

The design is pretty much cat-proof as it has a rubber lining to protect the insides of the chamber, making it impervious to scratching and digging. You can also make sure that your cat will not have to rush, you can choose a three-, seven-, or 15-minute wait time before the device cleans itself.

Another thing that you would like about the Litter-Robot III is that it really does keep odor to a minimum with the charcoal filter and the vents on the waste drawer. You also need less cat litter for this. It is estimated that you use 50 percent less litter with this device.

What Can Be Better

The Litter-Robot III uses sensors to detect when cats are coming in. However, cats that are lighter than five pounds might not be recognized by the sensor, so this is not something that you can use for kittens. You cannot train them from the start. Kittens may still use the Litter-Robot III, but it will not clean itself afterward.

The original Litter-Robot III does not have Wi-Fi connectivity. Apart from being able to control your Litter-Robot III from anywhere, the Connect version has some pretty nifty features such as having a usage chart. This feature will allow you to check on your cat’s habits on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Further, the Litter-Robot III can be quite finicky. It needs a specific type of litter and uses a particular amount. If you get the type or amount litter wrong, it’s bound to get jammed. What’s more, you are bound to have some parts replaced as well, so whatever savings you get from using less litter, you will eventually spend on replacement parts.

The Litter-Robot III vs. Traditional Litter Boxes

There are a lot of things that you can say is wrong with the Litter-Robot III. Its waste drawer is small; it’s too bulky, it gets stuck, it has expensive replacement parts. And yes, it is costly as well. You need to spend $449 for this device, while you only need to pay anywhere from $20 to $25 for Nature’s Miracle Just For Cats Advanced High Sided Cat Litter Box or usually around half the price for a Modkat Flip Litter Box.

Either way, you will have enough money to buy several years’ worth of litter.

However, the Litter-Robot III does offer something that these old school litter boxes do not: automatic scooping. If you opt for the Wi-Fi version, things get more high tech, and you can control your litter box with your smartphone. This device is for those who are looking to have a more convenient way of dealing with their cat’s mess.

It may not be perfect, but it works.

Alternatives to the Litter-Robot III

Some people want the convenience they get from the Litter-Robot III but are turned off by the price tag. If you are one of them, here are some alternatives.

CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box

The CatGenie cat box can clean itself and then flushes everything away. You need to connect it to a cold water line and plug it into an electrical socket. It uses Washable Granules that feels like litter. Plus these granules are reusable; you do not have to replace it.

The CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box  gets an average rating of 3.7 stars out of 5.0 on Amazon, with close to 1,000 reviewers leaving their opinions.

CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box (Not AI)

Verified users love how the CatGenie allows them to program the device and then forget about it. Others like how it can save them from having to buy litter and dirtying up the environment.

However, there are a lot of complaints about how this device clogs up quickly. What’s more, some people warn others that this can bake cat poo. It seems like everything that could go wrong, will. From clogged drains to jammed hoses, and yes even baked waste brownies.

Worse, there are complaints about the CatGenie becomes smelly after some time, due to a variety of reasons like the litter not doing an excellent job of absorbing the smell.

PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box

PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box cleans itself, so you do not have to worry about scooping or refilling for weeks on end. It also uses crystal litter material that can absorb urine while dehydrating solid waste. No more odors. These crystals also do not stick to your cat’s feet, and it is completely dust-free.

The ScoopFree Ultra is very easy to clean up, and the waste tray has a plastic lining that prevents any leaks and mess. It also has a health counter that keeps track of the number of times your cat uses the device. The Ultra version comes in two colors: taupe and purple.

PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box – Automatic with Disposable Tray – Taupe...

With around 1,800 reviewers, this product gets an average rating of 3.6 out of 5.0 stars on Amazon. People love the way this device sucks the odor out of anything your cat puts into it. Because it was utterly odor-free, some cat owners thought that their cats were not using it. Others like it for the convenience it gives them.

However, some people advise others to buy a permanent tray rather than use disposable ones to save money. Others also say that the PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra will not last a month before needing upkeep. Then there are those who warn would-be buyers that solid waste material sometimes sticks to the rake.

Others say that this product does not work as advertised, lamenting that they still need to scoop and clean the PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra because there are times when it does not clean itself and instead smears the poo all over the box.

Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll ‘n Clean Litter Box

The Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll ‘n Clean Litter Box is yet another no-scooping litter box that has a unique characteristic: its budget-friendly price. You can buy it and still not worry about your cat’s mess.

This is not electric, however. When your cat finishes doing its business, you would need to manually roll the entire thing over to one side to sift the waste from the litter, and then roll it again so that the filtered poo goes into the pull-out tray.

Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Litter Box Large EL-RA20-1

While a bit more low-tech than the others, the Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll ‘n Clean Litter Box gets an average rating of 3.6 stars out of 5.0 from more than 500 reviewers on Amazon. People love how this litter box saves them time from scooping. The cleaning process does not hurt their backs or shoulders, and it works rather well.

However, there are complaints that the Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll ‘n Clean Litter Box might be a bit messy. There are others who say that the design flaws kill this litter box including not being able to seal the box tightly. Others say that this product brought more problems than convenience.

Should You Buy the Litter-Robot III?

One of the first things that you would notice about the Litter-Robot III is the price tag.  It is expensive, and there is a chance that your cat would not even go into it. But that is not a fault of the product, which is why you can buy with confidence with the company’s money-back guarantee.  Some people would nitpick about the Litter-Robot III not being as good as old school litter boxes. None of the automatic and self-cleaning litter boxes work as well as the old ones they have at home.

The Litter-Robot III is admittedly not for everyone. But if you are sick and tired of doing the scooping yourself, this product is probably your best way out. Admittedly, there are other self-cleaning products that you can buy, and they are significantly cheaper than the Litter-Robot III.  However, judging from the reviews from actual users, these alternatives might prove to be more trouble than its worth.

Lastly, the Litter-Robot III is not a shabby piece of technology.  It comes with a wide range of features that shows that the company knows cats and their needs.  From the automatic nightlight to the rubber protection for the internal chambers, this product is just perfect for any cat.  And it works as advertised too.  In fact, it works the best among all other self-cleaning litter boxes available today.
