Tips For Choosing the Right Robot Vacuum
There are a wide variety of features available on robot vacuums these days, but some features are more necessary than others.
For example, a robot vacuum should have a remote control. The point of the thing is to make it easy on you to run the sweeper when you just want to relax. There’s no reason why you should have to get up off of the couch to start and stop it.
Most robot vacuums also know when to return to the dock to charge. You shouldn’t have to look far and wide for a robot vacuum that can detect a low battery, return to the charging station, and then resume vacuuming when it’s fully charged again.
Make sure your robot vacuum has stair detection, so you don’t have to run frantically to save it every time it tries to go down a flight of stairs. It can back away from a flight of stairs or a ledge to prevent damage.
You may also want to set a schedule for your robot vacuum. If you have the ability to set a schedule, you can program it to vacuum when it’s convenient for you. It may be the same time every day, or at different times every day of the week.
Your robot vacuum should be quiet. You can’t very well relax while a noisy vacuum is cleaning the house. Pay attention to the decibel level of the vacuum and also determine when you may want to use it. If you use it mostly while you’re away, it may not matter to you.
Some robot vacuums allow you to set a perimeter for cleaning, so it doesn’t go where you don’t want it to go. This is important because some robot vacuums have a hard time transitioning from carpet to tile or vise versa, and it’s wise to set it up to clean one at a time. You can also use this feature to keep the vacuum away from pets or out from under your feet while you’re cooking dinner.
Ecovacs Deebot N79 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The Ecovacs Deebot N79 is perfect for those who want to control their robot vacuum using the app on their smartphone at a reasonable price. You can download the app on your phone and hook the vacuum to your Wi-Fi. Then you can control the vacuum even when you’re not home.
You can also set a cleaning schedule before you leave and it will start automatically. Check the app for updates on your vacuum’s status on both hardwood floors and carpets. The suction power on the N79 is excellent for a low pile.
You can choose different cleaning modes depending on whether you need to clean a single room, edges only, or a tough spot with a stain. It can also sense stairs or drops and navigate around the objects in its way.
Deebot N79 Pros:
- Smartphone app controls
- Stair detection
- Obstacle detection
Deebot N79 Cons:
- Small dustbin needing frequent emptying
- Only works on low pile carpets
Not a lot of people have 70’s shag carpet anymore, but if you do have plush or deep pile carpets, this isn’t the best option for you. However, if you have mostly low pile carpet with some hardwood or tile, it’s the perfect solution.
iRobot Roomba 980 Robot Vacuum
The iRobot Roomba 980 robot vacuum rarely misses anything. It provides next level cleaning and gives you a map of its cleaning areas using a Clean Map report from its mobile app that connects to your unit.
Using the smartphone app, you can also schedule your cleaning times or start the vacuum remotely. The Carpet Boost feature increases the vacuum power up to ten times when on the carpet and the iAdapt 2.0 Navigation has Visual Localization so the vacuum can navigate rooms and obstacles all while keeping track of where it’s already been and where it needs to go next.
Use the vacuum virtual wall barriers to keep it in the exact space you want it. The Halo mode allows you to put a boundary around fragile objects, keeping the Roomba 980 away from them, so you don’t risk damage.
The Roomba 980 is a great choice for houses with pets because it has a patented tangle-free brush design that keeps pet hair from getting tangled in the bristles. The filter on this iRobot vacuum can capture ninety-nine percent of allergens, keeping your house clean and fresh.
It can run up to 120 minutes the first time but will recharge itself when it gets low and then finish the vacuuming job it started if needed. All of this comes in a compact package, allowing for vacuuming under short furniture.
Roomba 980 Pros:
- Smartphone app controls
- Voice controls using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
- Brush design picks up pet hair
Roomba 980 Cons:
This is a great choice if you have pets or need to get rid of allergens. Its design allows for the cleaning of up to ninety-nine percent of allergens, so despite the price point, it may be the best choice if you have pets or health issues in your home.
Eufy RoboVac 11
Sometimes when you vacuum, the vacuum can stir up more allergens than it captures. The Eufy RoboVac 11 can solve your problems. It has three allergen-reducing features that it deploys while cleaning, including a HEPA-style filter. The filtration system captures and traps the most microscopic allergy triggers including dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores.
You can program the RoboVac 11 to run when you need it, or you can start it manually. It works on hardwood and carpet. With one rolling brush, two side brushes, and powerful suction, it can pick up almost anything.
The RoboVac 11 can go an hour and a half without needing a charge or a clean filter. It gives you a deep clean every time you run it. It uses infrared sensors to avoid obstacles so it doesn’t dent any furniture, and it’s short enough to fit under low furniture.
RoboVac 11 Pros:
- Picks up an impressive amount of dirt
- Avoids obstacles using infrared sensors
- Fits under low furniture
RoboVac 11 Cons:
- Can get stuck on uneven surfaces
- Doesn’t work well on high-pile carpets
If you’re looking for a vacuum that can eliminate allergens and release clean air back into your home, then you’ve made the right choice with the Eufy RoboVac 11.
Pyle PureClean Robot Vacuum Cleaner
The Pyle PureClean can vacuum up pet hair on a budget. This robot vacuum will be your new best friend after it cleans up your current best friend’s hair. It has dual rotating sweepers combined with powerful suction to prevent clogging, whereas other vacuums only have a single underbrush.
The HEPA filter minimizes allergens in the air and puts clean air back into your home when it’s done. Schedule the PureClean to run when you’re away or manually start the vacuum when you need to clean up a spill. It can run for ninety minutes before needing a charge.
Edge mode, full room mode, and spot mode allow you to set it to clean whatever needs to be cleaned. Vacuum the whole room, pay specific attention to the edges where pet hair gathers, or spot clean a pet stain with ease.
- Puts pet hair and other particles through a HEPA filter
- Scheduling option
- Edge mode, full room mode, and spot mode
- Low profile
- Doesn’t work on high-pile carpet
The PureClean works in whichever mode you need to clean pet hair and other allergens out of your house using a HEPA filter and three brushes to prevent clogging. If you need a heavy duty pet cleaner, this one is for you.
EC Technology Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
If you like a clean house every day, but don’t want to do the cleaning yourself every day, use the EC Technology Robotic Vacuum Cleaner to schedule your cleanings up to seven times a week. You can set the time you want it to start each day, and it will take care of the rest.
It doesn’t get stuck on the carpet like some other robot vacuums do. It automatically cleans carpet in its suspension lifting mode. It adjusts to the height of the floor it is cleaning, so it can wander from room to room, and you don’t have to worry about what type of flooring is in each.
You can also block areas you don’t want it to clean. Using an ultrasonic wall, you program it to ignore specific areas or rooms, and it will pass them by and move on to the next. You can also choose from quite a few more modes than other robot vacuums.
The EC has five different settings to choose from based on the shape of your room. Free cleaning cleans in a straight line across the room, spiral cleaning cleans in a spiral pattern, z-shaped cleaning cleans in a zig-zag, pentagonal cleaning, and customized cleaning.
The self-adjusting wheels will retreat when they get stuck instead of trying to keep going or moving to the side, which is what causes a lot of other robot vacuums to get stuck and stay that way.
If you are worried about your vacuum getting stuck or being less efficient, the EC Technology Robot Vacuum is the choice for you.
- Doesn’t get stuck
- Won’t get hung up on multiple obstacles like the kitchen table and chair legs
- Adjusts to the height of the floor
- Runs every day of the week to eliminate the stress of cleaning
- Low profile
- Weaker suction
Because the suction isn’t as powerful as some of the other options, if you need a deep cleaning on a regular basis or you have a pet, it may not be your best option. However, if you just like to keep up with routine vacuuming maintenance on a daily basis, it’s a great option to turn on and leave because it doesn’t get stuck.
ILIFE A4 Robot Vacuum Cleaner
The ILIFE A4 cleaner can really deliver an excellent clean on the carpet without breaking the bank. The three-stage cleaning process uses a side brush to push debris into the path of the robot and then uses suction to pick it up.
You’re less likely to find dirt stuck along the walls with the ILIFE A4. There’s also a tangle-free brush under the vacuum and two side brushes so it can sweep debris from all angles and then pick it up with powerful suction.
For the extra clean that you need, activate Max mode with your remote control, and it will provide a super-powered deep clean with its maximum pick up power. The battery can last up to 140 minutes, but it knows how to return to the dock if it needs charging.
You can program the ILIFE A4 to run while you’re away and you can monitor its status whenever you want using the smartphone app. Unfortunately, you can only schedule it for the same time each day, but you can also start it manually if you need to clean outside of your regular schedule.
- Powerful suction
- Multiple brushes
- Programmable scheduling
- Can pick up large debris
- Low profile
- You can only set up a schedule for the same time each day
This is one of the most thorough cleans you’ll find in a robot vacuum. If you need to be able to set a flexible cleaning schedule, the ILIFE isn’t for you, but if you need powerful suction, deep cleaning, and the ability to pick up large debris, it’s an excellent choice.
Neato Botvac Connected Wi-Fi Enabled Robot Vacuum
If you need the newest technology in all of your gadgets, the Neato Botvac is for you. Instead of avoiding obstacles in its path while sporadically cleaning each room, the Neato Botvac scans the room with its Laser Smart mapping and navigation first. It knows exactly how big the room is, and what shape, so it can build a more effective cleaning path.
These technologies, combined with the real-time object detection allow it to map the room and clean more methodically, so you get a more comprehensive clean from one wall to the other. If it runs out of battery before it’s done, it will return to its dock to charge, and when it’s ready, it will resume cleaning where it left off.
The Neato Botvac will clean up to five thousand square feet in one cycle, and it takes as little as 120 minutes to do it because it is so ultra-efficient and it goes about its cleaning more methodically than other robot vacuums.
You also have the option of running turbo mode for heavy cleaning or Eco mode when you want a fast and eco-friendly cleaners.
While you have to program other robot vacuums to clean walls separately, the Neato Botvac includes that in its normal cleaning cycle. The shape of the Neato allows it to reach corners and hug walls. It also uses high-powered suction and precision brushes for the hard-to-reach debris, dust, and pet hair.
The extra-large dustbin conquers large areas without clogging, meaning you don’t have to clean it out as often. In addition to all of these great features, the Neato Botvac is also equipped with onboard Wi-Fi so you can sync it to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant for voice command operation.
Using the Neato app, you can start your robot vacuum while you’re away or receive notifications about your vacuum’s status. The Neato Botvac really does have it all. It comes highly recommended by many users, but also comes with quite the price tag.
- Voice command operation
- Compact shape
- Turbo and Eco modes
- Scanning and mapping technology
While the Neato Botvac is pricey, it’s still less expensive than some of the other brand name counterparts, and it does incorporate quite a bit of current technology to make it more efficient and easier to use. It’s worth it if you need the bells and whistles.
With all of the smart home devices on the market, it’s only a matter of time before we’re all equipped with more smart household items that we can handle. However, it does seem to simplify our lives, and when it comes to cleaning, you can’t have too much help.
These seven robot vacuums are great all-around performers. While the iRobot and the Neato are probably the best performing brands overall, they’re not explicitly made for carpet. They do a thorough job at cleaning just about any floor you have.
If you have pets or allergies, the iRobot or the PureClean are your best options because they provide the most efficient hair removal, although the RoboVac does have a HEPA filter, so it does a great job of cleaning the air as well as the floor.
If the technology is what you’re after, then the Neato Botvac is a clear choice. It has just about everything you could want from a smartphone app to voice command capabilities, to scheduling, to mapping and navigation, to an incredibly thorough clean.
All of the robot vacuums on our list will handle obstacle navigation and clear low furniture; however, if you are looking for a vacuum that won’t get hung up, the EC Technology robot vacuum is the way to go since it automatically adjusts to the level of flooring in each room. You can set it and forget it without worrying about it getting snagged and not doing its job.
The choice is yours. Your needs will dictate which vacuum is right for you. None of these is a bad choice. You just have to decide what you need, what features you want, and what price you want to pay.
